Young Men — Do As Liz

Liz The Cat wrote.

I can’t count the number of times Mike or I have helped a person/persons out with no expectation of any return whatsoever, simply because it seemed like the right thing to do.
And it later paid out in spades, in some unforeseeable way, due to no calculated intention whatsoever.

Yes, this is the way to go. One might not be able to help everybody, but you can help some. Do it because it is right, not because you expect a payback. If you are keeping score, people can tell, and that mostly ruins things.

Help for others might not always work out, they may try to play you for a fool. Use your judgement, as in some cases by helping, you are just making the problem worse.

Hopefully, in the end, you make the world a better place.

    Thank you, Farmboy. 🙂
To me it’s kind of along the lines of the Broken Window Theory (recently posted at Jack’s. Human behavior as a manifestation of the environment. It’s true about order and cleanliness, and also true about helping others. It engenders trust and just makes the world a better place.
There are many, many people who have done far more than I have. When I am in a position of need, I am very grateful to others who have helped us. It isn’t usually monetary need anymore, but even just a kind word can really make a difference.

Kind of tangentially related (and wordy, sorry):
Yesterday I was trying to contact the Central florida tollway place and spoke to a person on the phone who was actually very helpful. We’d taken the car and driven through a toll road a couple of times. I expected to get a bill in the mail since all of mom’s mail is forwarded to us. Unfortunately, I didn’t anticipate the car registration would still be in Dad’s name (he passed on about eight years ago now). I never received the bill, and the fines for nonpayment are something like 500 dollars and up…also I remember that story in DC about the family whose car was stolen and they were assessed 5000 dollars in fines even though they didn’t drive it. As soon as it dawned on me (at a time when a lot of things do, when I’m lying in bed at night and can’t do anything about it until morning), I was really worried. Our home is still a sucking money pit with construction projects and everything is super expensive now. Anyway, they’d just put a hold on the registration and total was 13 dollars when I’d envisioned a lot more.
I guess its wasn’t exactly a kindness, but the person on the phone was very helpful when I expected a long process so if felt like one.
Hope you all have a great day.

After Biden’s spokeswoman boasted that the administration was ordering Facebook to censor some people’s speech, Fauci joined the campaign by appearing on CNN to warn about the dangers of letting anyone say whatever they think. “We probably would still have polio in this country if we had the kind of false information that’s being spread now,” he falsely claimed.

Fauci, as usual, is wrong about everything.

An examination of the case by BuzzFeed News also reveals that some of those informants, acting under the direction of the FBI, played a far larger role than has previously been reported. Working in secret, they did more than just passively observe and report on the actions of the suspects. Instead, they had a hand in nearly every aspect of the alleged plot, starting with its inception. The extent of their involvement raises questions as to whether there would have even been a conspiracy without them.

A longtime government informant from Wisconsin, for example, helped organize a series of meetings around the country where many of the alleged plotters first met one another and the earliest notions of a plan took root, some of those people say. The Wisconsin informant even paid for some hotel rooms and food as an incentive to get people to come.

The Iraq War vet, for his part, became so deeply enmeshed in a Michigan militant group that he rose to become its second-in-command, encouraging members to collaborate with other potential suspects and paying for their transportation to meetings. He prodded the alleged mastermind of the kidnapping plot to advance his plan, then baited the trap that led to the arrest.

Because many of these criminals have gotten violent when confronted by store owners and employees, most owners have made the decision not to approach or confront shoplifters. And since it’s only a misdemeanor crime, police don’t even bother pursuing the cases. So the thieves take their time, load up their bags, and walk out the door.

“The overall problem is a challenge — the brazenness of some of these crimes,” San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott said Wednesday. “When they see these things go viral, the perception of lawlessness, the perception that anything goes — that has to be overcome, too.”

Where did shoplifters ever get the idea that they wouldn’t be punished for stealing? As long as they don’t take merchandise worth more than $950, they’re in the clear. And the prospects of breaking the shoplifting gangs are bleak. All you need are three or four guys with plastic bags. Selling the merchandise is easy enough. You arrest one gang leader and another takes his place.

The Norwegian women’s beach handball team has been fined for refusing to play in bikini bottoms during a game in the sport’s Euro 2021 tournament.

The team wore thigh-length elastic shorts during their bronze medal match against Spain in Bulgaria on Sunday to protest against the regulation bikini-bottom design that the sport’s Norwegian federation president called “embarrassing.”

The team was fined 1,500 euros total ($1,700) for “improper clothing,” according to a statement from the European Handball Association’s Disciplinary Commission.

While male players are allowed to play in tank tops and shorts no longer than 4 inches above the knee, women are required to wear midriff-baring tops and bikini bottoms “with a close fit and cut on an upward angle toward the top of the leg” and a maximum side width of 4 inches, according to International Handball Federation regulations.
