As a kid, I didn’t much like soap operas, or daytime dramas, as they are officially called. In fact, they ruined the word drama for me, as it ways synonymous with soap opera in my mind.
Thank goodness my Mom didn’t watch soap operas, but I was rather unhappy that during the summer when I was home, this was the only thing on TV. Of course, this was in the days before cable. I wondered how anybody could watch such stuff.
It turns out that women can watch it rather easily. It provides them with people, and their interactions and relationships. For the ladies, what is not to like? They must keep track of who is doing what to who and how it all affects their relative standing in the village. I suppose that this is just what they do. Perhaps I should just embrace it all.
Modern women, those following the feminist script of careers, maybe kids, pushing for more, more, more, have enough drama in their lives I do think. Do they need more? Do they need soap operas?
What is your answer?
Never watched Soap Operas or reality television.
I understand the popularity of Soap Operas more than reality television though.
One is like a really bad piece of fiction.
The other is like an even worse piece of fiction.

Back when I was in college in the 80’s the 5 guys in my house would all get together to watch Days of Our Lives between classes. The volume was always off though as we were only interested in the 3-4 super hot chicks they had on at that time. Sometimes a girl would be over and say, “Hey can we turn the volume up?”
“NOOOO!”
Marlena was the older woman we all wanted to have sex with and Carrie was the girl we wanted for a girlfriend, who we would constantly have sex with.

If they are working, they won’t be home to watch anyway.
EDIT: As I’m about to click “Post Comment” it occurs to me that my comment is outdated. I forgot that one can now watch television on their smart phone. So – probably the answer is that the career ladies will watch whichever drama holds the most interest for them. If something is going on in front of them at work, they don’t need to watch the soap opera. If nothing is going on, either they will start something, or will just watch the drama on their phone screen.
I’ve long thought that Steve Jobs’ genius was that he created the technical baby for career women. Something they can cuddle in their hands, with a face(s) to look at as they cuddle it. And as much talk as they want, even if most of it is just babbling.

The main reason a majority of Britons want to leave the EU is the micro-management of British public life and British courts and legislators by a regime in Brussels that is not answerable or accountable either to the European Parliament or to the governments of the major constituent states. The second reason is immigration: the famous Polish plumbers are welcome (and much needed), but masses of penniless and unskilled migrants from the Middle East and Africa coming to Britain via Europe are another matter.

It’s a lot tamer than this one as far as “candor”…I wouldn’t post there a lot of the stuff I post here. Which is an important bit of information to place this in context:
Yesterday, the admin received a message that a post violated FB “community standards”. Note the Orwellian nature:

I have to really wonder if the whistleblower “Anonymous”, cited in the NYTimes with a new book out this month, is the person the rumors are indicating it is.
Now, I have come to expect a lot of prevarication in the form of parsed statements, or things taken out of context, partial information et al. I completely expect the janitor to be described as an “anonymous White House insider”.
But if this person is The “Anonymous” the bar has been lowered beyond the pale.
Obviously they’re not going to say this is some sketchy low level dude.
But calling him a “senior level official”?!? Really?
A low level young staff weenie whose own father doesn’t believe he could be The “Anonymous” due to his low level position?
I know mainstream media has sunken far…very far, but there is usually some level of truth to their claim, at least to protect their credibility even a modicum. This would be straight forward outright fabrication.
Time will tell.

A phenomenon worthy of some attention in the manosphere on the same order as the attention shown to the phenomenon of Shades of Grey. What do women respond to? The nice guy, right?
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luke_and_Laura
Luke Spencer and Laura Webber are fictional characters, and the signature supercouple from the American daytime drama General Hospital.
Despite having been raped by a drunken Luke, Laura falls in love with him. Originally, critics of the soap opera genre panned the choice of having a rape victim fall in love with her rapist, an example of forced seduction. The unlikely pairing became popular in spite of Luke’s past misdeed when the story shifted to focus on love and redemption.
The couple wed at the end of the hour-long show on November 16, 1981; the event was watched by 30 million viewers and remains the highest-rated hour in American soap opera history. Viewers watched as the show followed their marriage through two decades and gave them two children. Today, their union still has a presence in fictional town Port Charles. In 1996, TV Guide included the wedding of Luke and Laura as part of its “100 Most Memorable Moments in TV History,” ranking it number 35. On Internet message boards, the couple is often referred to as “L&L” or “LnL” (for Luke and Laura).

i asked my Husband b/c his mother was an avid soap watcher, and he immediately remembered L&L. he said that Luke was hired as a hit man to take Laura out, but while watching her he fell in love with her and couldn’t do it. then the people who hired him figured it out, hired someone else to do the job, and they went on the run together. i mentioned that apparently he raped her. he chuckled and said, “Yeah, you could call it that, but she wanted it!” i guess they’d built some kind of relationship by that point. my Husband said that everyone watched it, including all the guys he knew. i was shocked. he said, “You think they could have got those ratings on just women alone?” he said they tried to bring them back a few years after they left the show but it never had the same ratings. i guess the story line that drew in the guys was a one-and-done.

@Ame – re https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luke_and_Laura
Not that the story of Luke and Laura, as soap-opera personalities, really matters. But what their storyline portrays is as current as today’s blog posts in the manosphere.
Smith wrote a controversial rape storyline between Luke and Laura. To prepare for the story, Geary and Francis both met with a social worker before taping the rape scenes. Originally intended to be a brutal attack, Monty re-choreographed the scene’s blocking in order for the encounter to come off as a seduction.
General Hospital’s music director at the time, Jill Farren Phelps, chose to use the song “Rise”, written by Randy “Badazz” Alpert and Andy Armer, performed by trumpeter Herb Alpert during the rape scene and ensuing scenes that recalled the rape. “Every time Laura thought of the terrible rape by Luke, it was played to evoke that memory,” Phelps said. “Consequently, we used it constantly for a while.
Then we turned the story around so that he was no longer the rapist and that was no longer the appropriate piece of music.” The song already ranked on the Billboard Hot 100, but the exposure “Rise” gained from appearing on General Hospital helped bring it to number one.
After the story aired in October 1979, it was looked back on as a rape and Laura was shown getting rape counseling. However, the writers decided to have the characters look back on the incident as a seduction instead of a rape because the pairing resonated with the audience. “From that point on, we played [Luke’s] regret and his total devastation,” Geary said. “That’s a story nobody wants to tell—that the rapist’s life is as devastated as the person he rapes. His great love and regret and guilt are what caught the audience so off guard.”
Why would Luke have regret and total devasation over a seduction?
The show played off of the understanding that Luke raped Laura. And then Laura “fell in love with her rapist”. The only reason that the Luke character was not killed off soon after, as was the original plan, was because of the overwhelmingly positive audience reaction to Laura falling in love with her rapist. Doesn’t really matter that they toned down the rape scene from what was originally planned. The folks quoted in the Wikipedia entry clearly intended to portray to the audience that Laura had been raped. And that Laura fell in love with her rapist. And the audience responded hugely to that. Shades of “hit her over the head and drag her off to your cave”.
Which circles back to the question of which guy are the ladies actually attracted to? The nice guy? The producers of the show found out differently.

A fetching young woman responding emotionally and sexually to a display of male power and strength. Responding emotionally and sexually because of that display of power and strength. That is the stuff of every young man’s dreams. I don’t wonder that the young guys were watching Luke and Laura’s story alongside the young girls.
Contrast that with the male response to all of the conversations going on currently about patriarchy and rape culture. Young men are not lining up to watch that storyline.
I’m not advocating violence of any kind. But the difference in male response between the Luke and Laura story and the rape culture story is real, and quite visible. There has to be something real and true behind the cliche hit her over the head and drag her back to your cave or it never would have become a cliche.
Somewhere I have a quote from Sunshine Mary about the first time her husband was firm with her (she described it, but I don’t remember details). Having had feminist views through college, and maybe into her marriage, SSM said she was very surprised at the positive response that rose up inside of her when her husband displayed his power and strength. IIRC, that was the begining of the crumbling of her feminist thinking.
That so many young folks (both female and male) responded positively to the Luke and Laura story, and placed alongside the vignette from SSM, and the male response to the current feminist trope against patriarchy and rape culture, there must be some there there.

What an opener: In a foreign field … The rest just writes itself in my imagination.
It was never just a piece of cloth. It was always a stand-in for a set of ideals that men held dear. Ideals that men were willing to die for. Ideals that men don’t hold so dear anymore, and so it becomes just a piece of cloth. What’s to stand for, if that is all it is? Who honors that, it’s just a piece of cloth.
But not for everybody.
Thanks for that bg. It has instantly become one of my favorite songs.
