What Do They Believe?

What exactly do the SJWs and those inclined to support SJWs believe?

Probably with hardcore SJWs, they actually believe what they chant.  Perhaps some of them sometimes have doubts on some of their positions, but these are quickly repressed.  The expectations for the typical SJW with respect to IQ are rather modest, so maybe it isn’t entirely their fault.

Now let us consider a slice of the educated type, tech people.  The people of Google can be a surrogate for these.  Consider this,

Which brings us to Pichai, the supposed grown-up in the room. He could have wrestled with the tension between population-level research and individual experience. He could have stood up for the free flow of information. Instead he joined the mob. He fired Damore and wrote, “To suggest a group of our colleagues have traits that make them less biologically suited to that work is offensive and not O.K.”

That is a blatantly dishonest characterization of the memo. Damore wrote nothing like that about his Google colleagues. Either Pichai is unprepared to understand the research (unlikely), is not capable of handling complex data flows (a bad trait in a C.E.O.) or was simply too afraid to stand up to a mob.

We can perhaps infer from this that Pichai is an intelligent fella who decided to not use his intelligence when confronted with a situation that called for it.  But he is not alone; lots of techie people operate in this manner.  This situation has perplexed me for years; how can people who are intellignet and solve tough problems in the real world everyday, fall down so badly when understanding the real world outside their domain?

The real world can be a harsh judge, and if your computer program makes assumptions that are incorrect, there is a good chance that it will fail spectacularly.  As such, computer types learn to recognize precisely what is happening in a situation, and handle it effectively.  In short, they have to make real things work.

Yet as the silliness at Google has shown, they do not apply the same level of effort to understanding issues outside of their domain.  What is happening here?  Of course, as with most social issues, there are many things going on.  Let us consider some of them.

These people are higher IQ people, who have developed skills.  They are proud of themselves; perhaps too proud.  They have elite skills, and need elite world views to match.  With those, plus the appreciation of the right restaurants, food, arts, etc.  they are what the world should be.

So what would be the right world view?  It should start by being one that has not really been accepted as mainstream in past history; for one cannot be an avant guard elite if this isn’t true.  Furthermore, it has to make a case that it is better in a way that only high intelligence elites can discern compared to what is present or has come before.  Lastly, the world view has to appear to be at least plausible with respect to correctness.

We all know what world view Google the Corporation had/has.  For people who pride themselves in dealing well with complexity, they have a very simplified model of human nature.  Furthermore, science points to the fact that their model is not very effective at modeling the situation; it assumes that human nature very malleable and rather simple (e.g. blank slate, men and women are the same).  But most of all, those uneducated (at least in the elites’ minds) people, who deal with the reality that they see in their life everyday the best that they can (perhaps elites don’t need to do this so much, I don’t know), effectively have a better model of human nature for use in the everyday world.  Their model is not pure, complete and simple; but it works.

This just cannot be.  It is an assault on what these self-designated elites believe their world should be.  Therefore it is an assault on them, and their exalted status in the world.  For them, this keystone cannot fail.  This is why the corporate culture is so strongly enforced.  Those that stand on shaky ground work the hardest to stabilize it.

Deep down, I am sure that a large number of these elites understand the weaknesses of their world view.  But it is suppressed.  Who wants to fall out of the self-designated elite group?

For others, being part of a some in-group is not important; rather understanding the reality of a situation is.

Which is healthier?

    “What do they believe?”
Whatever their social superiors tell them to. They would rather be socially conforming than true.
I am sorry, but self righteous, reactionary hypocrites have been the bane of existence for all who can think for themselves.

One of the most surprising and bizarre pieces of information from Arthur’s interview is that feminine hygiene products are kept in men’s restrooms at Google. Arthur explained, “There are also women’s hygiene products in the men’s rooms, because as we all know, some men menstruate.”

Breitbart editors initially thought this claim was so absurd that we were being trolled with fake news. However, a previous interviewee, Emmett, corroborated the story saying, “It is certainly true that there are tampons and pads in men’s restrooms. To my understanding, there have been complaints that these were tossed away by men using the bathroom when no one was looking”

In most corporations (at least in the sub-units for really large ones), you don’t get hired unless you pass the “Pavel” Test (from last thread). Therefore, you end up with mainly employees who behave in the way “Pavel” approves of. Instant corporate culture, for better or for worse.

“These people are higher IQ people, who have developed skills.” So far as I know, high IQ does not correlate well with people skills. So – for those who are not natural-born citizens, and who are brilliant programmers with poor ability to understand relationship / people things, my question from several threads ago becomes relevant: “Of what value is telling the truth if the truth lies in so much detail that the listener won’t understand our answer?” …

“If those levels of understanding are absent in the listener, a much less detailed, much less truthful explanation will be more useful to the listener than the absolute truth. In complex cases such as these, a model of reality will be more useful to the listener than a presentation of the actual reality itself. The listener needs true enough, not absolute truth, in order to make sense of the information.

Most of us live our lives on that level – true enough – whether we realize it or not.”

We make statement about “those who can think for themselves”. The truth is, whether one can think for themselves or not depends on how well they understand the detailed, many-leveled, subject matter they are facing. It is impossible to know all things – there is just too much information out there. Therefore, anyone can, at least theoretically, be placed into a situation where it is impossible for them to “think for themselves”. They just don’t know enough about the situation to do that properly.

To the extent that my comments above are true, how are leaders gonna lead – when the listener won’t understand the complexity of the truth and will therefore not know what to do with the detailed information he has been given that he doesn’t understand?

That is a toughie. Still, people should be able to see glaring faults with the worldviews that they espouse.

The most visible Mass Hysteria of the moment involves the idea that the United States intentionally elected a racist President. If that statement just triggered you, it might mean you are in the Mass Hysteria bubble. The cool part is that you can’t fact-check my claim you are hallucinating if you are actually hallucinating. But you can read my description of the signs of mass hysteria and see if you check off the boxes.

If you’re in the mass hysteria, recognizing you have all the symptoms of hysteria won’t help you be aware you are in it. That’s not how hallucinations work. Instead, your hallucination will automatically rewrite itself to expel any new data that conflicts with its illusions.

But if you are not experiencing mass hysteria, you might be totally confused by the actions of the people who are. They appear to be irrational, but in ways that are hard to define. You can’t tell if they are stupid, unscrupulous, ignorant, mentally ill, emotionally unstable or what. It just looks frickin’ crazy.

The reason you can’t easily identify what-the-hell is going on in the country right now is that a powerful mass hysteria is in play. If you see the signs after I point them out, you’re probably not in the hysteria bubble. If you read this and do NOT see the signs, it probably means you’re trapped inside the mass hysteria bubble.

Another day, yet another statue of a military hero is reportedly under fire. This figure astride a horse was vandalized with the spray-painted words “Tear It Down.”

Who was this historical figure? General Lee? Stonewall Jackson? Nathan Bedford Forrest?

The phrase “Tear it Down” was hastily sprayed in black paint across the base of the golden Joan of Arc statue on Decatur Street in the French Quarter sometime earlier this week.

People who feel unkindly disposed towards economic migrants are chemically imbalanced, according to a study from the University of Bonn. More specifically, they are deficient in oxytocin, a neuropeptide hormone sometimes known as the ‘cuddle drug’ because of its ability to turn normal human beings into simpering halfwits.

Psychologists ran a series of studies in which Germans were asked how much money they would like to give to, say, Tariq and Mohammed, who have just arrived here from Syria. ‘Nothing at all, unless they intend to spend it on a ticket home’ is of course the correct response, and indeed many Germans initially concurred with this. However, after they were bunged some oxytocin they were handing out the dosh willy-nilly. Remarkable. Perhaps German women should be given regular doses to make them more amenable when they are sexually assaulted by the so-called refugees. Or perhaps the researchers have got the whole thing the wrong way round and the people who are most fervently in favour of the unlimited arrival of talented brain surgeons, engineers, physicists etc from the Levant, Somalia and beyond actually have far too much oxytocin, and it is they who are chemically imbalanced, not the rest of us.

Spawny & Farm Boy et al, I’m starting an email series, mostly because the posts are already almost completely written and answered in my emails, but also because apparently new lurkers are asking the same questions.

It’d be great to have other people’s opinion on these questions… if any of y’all are interested in answering it differently.

This one was about how much it’s appropriate to chase a guy… and it devolved into other questions since “chasing” is complicated depending on the situation, or the man in particular.

Anyway, it was really fun to answer this one for some reason 🙂 Just wondering if y’all agree with it or disagree and think otherwise.

Google revealed in a blog post that it is now using machine learning to document “hate crimes and events” in America. They’ve partnered with liberal groups like ProPublica, BuzzFeed News, and the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) to make information about “hate events” easily accessible to journalists. And now, there are troubling signs that this tool could be used to ferret out writers and websites that run afoul of the progressive orthodoxy.

  38. Cautiously Pessimistic says:

Engineers are generally smart enough to realize that how they see the world is different from how others do. And so, if they are brought up in a certain way, they leave human interaction to the experts. If the experts say that men and women are the same, why would the engineers think differently?

Except men and women aren’t the same. Sooner or later, reality conflict with what the engineers have been taught. All an honest mistake, obviously. Why would the experts lie? Everyone is in search of the truth, because why wouldn’t we be? And so papers are written, explaining that what the engineers were taught doesn’t match what they’re seeing. This is done so that better models for human interaction can be developed.

The experts didn’t make an honest mistake. And the engineers pointing out the differences are swarmed unexpectedly, even though the appropriate shibboleths were observed.

    So, strategies/operations/tactics are adjusted.
