If you haven’t, if you can tolerate it, check out the links above. What we have here are people living in a fantasy world only marginally connected to the real one. How does this come to be?
First of all, they (and society) can afford it. They live off of the work and virtue of others. If a society was not so wealthy, they would either come back to reality, or starve.
Second, they hang around others with the same nutty views; reinforcing each other. They need such mutual support because their ideas so truly do not model reality. Perhaps they could be described as co-dependent.
They obtain a high from all of this stuff. It is legal and effectively subsidized. Being high helps them to pretend to not to notice how their BS does not match reality.
Historically, society has tolerated some silliness from women; why not tolerate a bit more?
Then, of course, is the “we are superior because we are so enlightened” view. Only a small number can be superior, and they are it. Being so totally out in left field helps keep the numbers down, increasing the exclusivity.
Finally, there is the practical benefit of claiming victim status. Subsidize stupidity and it will continue.
