A common refrain for late teens and early twenties is that one needs to explore oneself to learn what you and the world really are. This typically in the western world manifests itself differently for the guys and gals. Let us consider in more depth.
For the guys, he may preparing for his career. Going to the University, working diligently, getting a degree (and often working at the same time). Or he might be learning a skill, like auto mechanics, welding, etc. Perhaps he joined one of the Armed Services to further his development. Of course, there are fellas like one of my nephews, who just hung around the house and played video games. I suggested that going to the local inexpensive community college to learn almost anything would be more effective with respect to “finding himself”, but I was shot down. So, for the fellas, either they are normally working, or bumming around home.
As for the gals, “finding themselves” is often very different. I have seen many a time when girls get to attend their university of choice (expensive ones at that), where their choice was made for totally frivolous reasons. Sometimes they get to “study abroad”. Often there are subsidized unpaid internships for them. And finally, there is the ubiquitous “general travel to exotic locations” silliness. Mom and Dad (and often especially Dad) pay for this.
In my case, I worked on farms in the hot summers; often covered with cow shit by the end of the day. That builds character. That helps one discover themselves. As for the typical girls path, I am not exactly sure how it really helps them in the same manner. Typically it allows them to do a combination of parlay their youth and beauty into favorable treatment, puff up their ego by being awesome, teach them to posture for progressive causes, etc. All of these are useless to the world. So one wonders how effective their attempt to explore oneself to learn what you and the world really are is. At least I do.
