Mary Sue — To Infinity and Beyond

From here,

Ever wonder why Star Wars decided to make Mary Sue character Rey their main focus for The Force Awakens? Well, according to Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy it’s because male Star Wars fans don’t need to be catered to anymore.

Why is that?  Because white males are the one group that one can take pot shots at without repercussions?  And were males ever really catered too?  The movies were mostly about swashbuckling adventures, a genre that has been in existence forever; one that attracted men and women (think Pirates of the Caribbean) .

In an interview with the New York Times, Kennedy addressed her decision to cast a female lead in her second movie in charge, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. “I have a responsibility to the company that I work with. I don’t feel that I have a responsibility to cater in some way [to those particular fans],” she said. “I would never just seize on saying, ‘Well, this is a franchise that’s appealed primarily to men for many, many years, and therefore I owe men something.’”

What kind of stupid logic is this?  She says that she is responsible to the company (Disney) that she works for.  Most people would assume that this responsibility is about financial success, but I am not so sure.  But apparently not.  She is deliberately ignoring the fans that made the franchise a success; more or less admitting that she is giving them something that they don’t want.  Perhaps the responsibility that she alludes to is about being PC.

Here we have a tweet from one of the writers of Rogue One

@chrisweitz Ethnically diverse group led by brave women rise up against new threat from authoritarian regime led by old white men? Check.

This kind of give the game away, does it not?

  1. That’s really nutty. What biz person w a wildly successful iconic brand just says, “meh, why stick with what our customers want?”

    Remember “new Coke?” Big flop.

    Farm Boy,
i don’t think a male led boycott had ever been tried. Given the high handedness of Ms. Kennedy speaking for Disney, men should boycott Disney. I t well past time. They don’t want out business. Add to that, even after the debacle that was the new Ghostbusters, these people still don’t get it.

Alien and Aliens are two of my favourite films ever. I think that the second works slightly better in having Ripley as a woman. I’m not sure that Ripley being a woman in the first film was the original plan, but it worked fine. She was brave because it was that or die, I can believe that. The second one she was blackmailed into being a ride-along civvy advisor, that worked too.

Ton at 4:05pm, I agree. I haven’t seen any hysteria over it on the serious political UK blogs, it’s just the war that we’re in. I suspect that it’s going to backfire on the establishment BIG TIME in their next elections. A wronged underdog who is visibly addressing reality while the political class keep making things worse for the proles…how does that go wrong outside of massive corruption which will be unhideable? It doesn’t.

Ooh look! After all the euro-pols have been talking tough, the real power in Germany (meaning the real power in the EU) speaks

Merkel told by GERMAN businesses: UK MUST have EU market access WITHOUT free movement

ONE of Germany’s leading business figures has launched a scathing attack on “childish” Chancellor Angela Merkel and Brussels bureaucrats over their behaviour towards Brexit Britain.

Speaking ahead of next week’s summit of EU leaders, Hans-Olaf Henkel, the former President of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), has called on them to grow up and strike a free trade deal with Britain.

Mr Henkel, who is one of the most respected business and political figures in his country and is now a Member of the European Parliament, has said a way needs to be found to allow the UK to stay as members of the common market and trade freely without free movement of people.

And in a furious attack on Mrs Merkel, he said she would go down in history as the politician who created Brexit for blocking a fair deal on border controls for David Cameron and opening the floodgates to immigrants from the Middle East and North Africa.

The other 27 EU heads of government gathering in Brussels next week have already tried to humiliate Theresa May by blocking her from joining them for the traditional dinner.

The hardline approach and threat of tariffs has, according to Mr Henkel, left many business people in Germany “very concerned” because they believe tariffs will hurt them even more than UK.

Mr Henkel described the behaviour of Mrs Merkel and European Commission President Jean Claude Juncker as “childish and counterproductive”.

He said: “It is childish because it is obviously a psychological reaction to the vote of the British people and they didn’t expect it, they didn’t like it and they want to punish Britain for a psychological reason rather than a logical reason.

    http://www.express.co.uk/news/world/741400/German-businessman-slaps-down-Angela-Merkel-childish

Merkin has been making some very different comments on immigration in the last week or two. She clearly want s to be re-elected. Though why the fuck the german people would, I haven’t a clue. She’s been a catastrophe for the continent and the country. But the Germans have that war-guilt thing going on, so…

Nigel Farage was on t’telly last night. He said that the BREXIT process could have been over in two weeks (now over six months while waiting to trigger a two year process FFS).

With an audience that was anti-BREXIT in tone of comments and clapping, Nigel didn’t get a hard time (IMHO) he got some respect even when saying uncomfortable things.

I’ll watch it when it’s free, probably. More to do with the dearth of anything else to watch. I like sci-fi. I watched episode VII once it became free (once, it was mediocre due to Mary-Sue, Darth Emo and the deeply beta (black) guy who added as much to the film as the dog in Battle Star Galactica)

Having said that, I still haven’t watched Mad Max Fury thingy (and that’s been free for months). I may watch ghostbusters when it’s free just to see the epic shitshow that results from a mangina remaking a classic film using wimminz..

In other movie news, I recently watched The Hateful Eight…yeah, not bad. The woman figure did some really nice small scale acting (Jennifer Jason-Leigh), she raised a few smiles while getting punched out / elbowed in the face etc). Tim Roth’s character’s accent playing up to US expectations was amusing too.

In a 3-2 ruling, the state’s highest court said the Michigan Court of Appeals correctly ruled that Stein was ineligible to pursue a recount.
