From the Atlantic,
So where do these men live? What are they doing all day?
The answer to the first question seems to be that more of them are living at home. For the first time since at least the 1940s, young men are more likely to be living with their parents than with romantic partners. In 2014, 35 percent of young men between 18 and 34 lived with their parents, compared to just 28 percent who lived with a spouse. It’s not the cost of college or the weight of student loans alone that is forcing young people to stay home. Young adults without a high-school or college degree are far more likely to live with their parents.
As for what they’re doing all day, Erik Hurst, an economist at the University of Chicago, is now conducting research that suggests that non-college men who aren’t in the labor market are spending a considerable amount of their time in front of screens.
Everybody knew this was coming. They are playing video games. Note that it is inherently understood that this is a very bad thing. Very bad.
In the 2000s, employment rates for young men with less than a four-year degree dropped sharply – more than in any other group. We have determined that, in general, they are not going back to school or switching careers, so what are they doing with their time? The hours that they are not working have been replaced almost one for one with leisure time. Seventy-five percent of this new leisure time falls into one category: video games.
They are having fun and not being productive. An obvious quest ion is why this is the way that it is. A partial explanation,
Detached from the labor force, with neither a college degree nor a steady job, these men have little income. But the technological revolution in media and entertainment of the last few decades has made it cheaper than ever to divert oneself on a phone, computer, television, or video-game console. Leisure is cheap enough that it apparently doesn’t require a steady W-2 or 1099 to have fun.
It is as if the author is pissed that video games are reasonably cheap. Perhaps they should be taxed… But it gets worse,
And they are having fun, Hurst emphasized. “Happiness surveys actually indicate that they [are] quite content compared to their peers,” he told UChicago. In the short run, not working doesn’t seem to make men miserable at all.
They were told as boys to prepare for a life of work, but somehow it did not sink in. Societal expectations are not having the desired effect. So let us chop them down and explain what they will be missing,
Cheap and abundant entertainment anesthetizes less-skilled and less-educated young men in the present. But in the long run, it cuts them off from the same things that provide meaning in middle age, according to psychological and longitudinal studies —a career, a family, and a sense of accomplishment. The problem is that these 20-year-olds will eventually be 30-year-olds and 40-year-olds, and although young men who don’t go to college might appear happy now, those same satisfaction studies suggest that they will be much less happy in their 30s and 40s—less likely to get married, and more likely to be in poverty.
So here is the crux. It is suggested that the typical beta bux scenario is the path to his happiness. In some cases it might be. It is a path full of work, danger and frustration. In the modern day, with men denigrated as they are, even many of the perceived successful are not feeling as such.
Furthermore there is the taxes that will be paid and the general productivity of life of work for the family man; with such men typically rising to the occasion of providing (and then some).
Finally there is the question as to whether these fellas will be unhappy in middle age. Perhaps video games would not have the same allure, but other activities might take their place (e.g. outdoorsy, building and fixing stuff). Once again, due to the situation of their youths (poor job prospects, slutty women riding the carousel, potential for divorce) they made that assessment that the family life was never in the cards, and as such, did not miss what was never within reach.
Obviously the MSM always misses the boat with respect to the last few paragraphs. Do they realize the truth, and are ignoring it? Is the narrative so strong that they can never break away? What precisely is their problem?
So are video games still fun when a fella is in his 40s?

As long as men in their 40s can afford a six pack of natty-daddy, and have bought a tent that doesn’t leak too badly from goodwill, some woman will latch on to him for what little he has. Seen this scenario lead to too many court cases for domestic violence.
Apparently men ‘can’ be legally kicked out of their tent.

And also why such men eventually come to wisdom and know when to fight and when to walk away from those who do not respect their fight. Again the honourable surrender that SJWs will never come to.

Among its many deficiencies, the Atlantic story doesn’t realize that gaming/VR and other electronic life substitutes will keep pace with need and demand as these men age. They are the market and will drive innovation. These guys will always have their electronic pacifiers.
More broadly, its just another story that ignores the fact that children who experience pointless, capricious divorce (I.e., 90% of divorces) simply never recover. Divorcing destroys childhood. It’s hard to survive with so-called adults stealing one’s childhood. You don’t go to work and get married if your primary life lesson is that a woman can take your home, children, money and freedom with a single phone call. Better, for them, to marry a console and go on Medicaid.

Never much played them unless I was off my feet. You know, recovering from injuries sustained while out doing the real life things they make video games about. The young men I have known who played regularly tended to make social events out of it. You know, that male bonding feminist and bitches of all sexes hate so much
Anyone catch the anti mgtow rants at slpha game? I keep reading those sort of things to see if the other side has improved their marketing. Answer is no by the way.

Maybe this comment will actually take…
You are 100% on the effect of divorce on children. Parents inadvertently teach kids that having two lives, one in each home, is normal. They never see how a man and woman are supposed to live and love together. It sets them up for the same type of life.

Given that so many in my age range of 30-somethings witnessed our parents go through terrible divorces and/or stay in seriously unhappy and even abusive relationships…Well, is it any wonder that we have decided that other pursuits?
My own mother has been married and divorced twice (both initiated by her, for very good reasons), and is currently unhappily single. My father is 3 times divorced (2 initiated by him) and currently wed to a 4th woman. I haven’t spoken to him in many years, so I’ve no idea if they’re happy or not. My uncle/his brother tells me they are.
But yeah. How exactly does growing up with this type of blatant admittance that Marriage Doesn’t Work make me, or anyone who has lived through it, want to offer our own necks? Why *shouldn’t* we play videogames, or LARP, or go to CCG and boardgame conventions? Why shouldn’t we go camping, or restore old cars, or become a mini entrepreneur?
I do have a Bachelor’s in Business, and I do have a 40 hour a week job that is sufficient for my needs + some wants. But marriage? Children? A mortgage for a home with a white picket fence?
That may as well be a fairytale. It can be real. But it too often is not.

It really is hard when your parents split, and no one shows you how to have a healthy relationship. And all too often the children become pawns in the power struggle between parents. How the parents try to out do each other, and use the kids as a prop against each other. It can often lead to kids being spoiled, and having an unrealistic view of how things really are in this world.
I’ve seen this play out over and over, and it is incredibly heartbreaking.
And what’s even worse, is when the parents actually had the white picket fence life, and threw it all away.

Hence why I’m pro-MGTOW, even as a “woman”.
I am not a hypocrite, I loathe unnecessary double standards, and really cannot find any fault with men who’ve chosen a similar lifestyle to myself.
Some in the manosphere have argued with me regarding this, saying that if I truly am a unicorn, then I have a “responsibility” to get hitched and produce babies. To which I offer a polite Fuck You.

I haven’t played any games in my fifties. If that helps. I did recently play Team Fortress 2 which was reasonably diverting. If I wake up fancying shooting something with free, limitless ammo, I’ll probably play it again.
I find blogs more interesting is all.
What I have zero interest in doing is working my balls off so that a woman can spend my money on useless shit, or having the latest car (mine’re interesting and fun, but not new), the latest sofas, the latest kitchen gadget.. Basically I am the retail world’s worst nightmare…someone uninterested in what they’re pushing, unless I happen to need something like it, I like it and the price is right.
They need to realise that they can’t shame people that think that they’re wankers trying to push something that is actively against their own interests. Or you can’t shame men like that, anyway. Women in general seem to suck up that shit like there’s no tomorrow…they pay for anal bleaching and vagina steaming after all

MGTOW to me is just putting yourself front and centre. Not buying the shaming of manginas and femeroids. It amounts to being independent minded and sceptical of the actions of current society.

10 years from now, when we’re in our 40s:
Holograms? Improved VR? Neural feeds? Actual artificial companions?
I see no reason to not have continued interest.

if i hear, “Children are resilient,” one more time to support divorce or to make one feel better b/c of divorce i think i’ll just have to slap someone. one can NEVER recover a childhood lost to divorce. never. my girls were 5 and 7 when their dad sat them down and told them we were divorcing, and in that nan-second, my Oldest daughter broke. she literally broke, and she has never been the same since. sometimes i cry when i see pics of her before that day. and remembering that moment and the time following always makes me cry.

On topic,
But if Hurst’s research is accurate (and profit margins from the video-game industry suggest that it is), then the issue becomes much bigger than video games themselves. The portrait that emerges of the young American male indicates an isolated, entertainment-absorbed existence, with only the most childlike social ties (such as with parents and “bros”) playing a meaningful role.

WAY off-subject, but I have, or once had, reason to wish we Yanks spelled and pronounced it “al-you-min-EE-um” instead of “a-loo-mi-num.” I used to teach photo-interpretation of industrial plants, including the aluminum production process, and the difference between “aluminum” and “alumina” (aluminum oxide, the feedstock of the aluminum-electrolysis process) was almost too tiny for my students to notice!
