Smug Alert

Today’s Progressive Types are very smug about their agenda.  Typically they believe that they are both smarter and morally superior to those that resist their agenda.   They can see the way forward.  They can see how things always should have been.  Through education and indoctrination people will come to see the greatness of their ways.  That is to say, they are very smug about themselves.

As covered here, there are many costs to “progress”, financial and otherwise.  If Progressive Types ever thought about the implications of their agenda, they would not be so smug.  But smug they are.  The question is why.  Here are some ideas,

1.  The desire to be smug (and hip, etc.) is just so strong that they can see little else (a tunnel vision if you will).

2.  They have been thoroughly indoctrinated and can’t think effectively for themselves.

3.  Who doesn’t want to be on the right side of history?

4.  I can advocate for silly ideas, feel smug, and the adults in the room will keep any real harm from happening due to those ideas

5.  You fill in your idea.

As usual, it is probably a combination of the above (and more).

Here is the final question:  Is it better to feel good about yourself, or to be correct in understanding the situation at hand?

Better to feel good, or actually do good it would be?

    Yoda,

It is best to do good, of course. The issue is that many of these “Progressive” types actually *do* believe, heart and soul, that encouraging the behaviors in the other post are somehow beneficial.

What they refuse to realize is there is a HUGE difference between legalization of homosexual marriage rights (aka marriage between loving, consenting adults) vs the utter idiocy of our current welfare system or the epidemic of frivorce/no-fault divorce.

Years ago, in band camp, there was a thread about “smug liberals”, started by a “progressive”. Sort of a question/answer exercise. It was interesting and I think one of the best responses is pertinent to the topic here.
(I’m quoting someone else here, the italics part is a second question, from a different respondent):
    *********************************
    Answer:
Liberals fail to grasp why folks object because liberals possess no empathy for the values that inform the judgement of “other people.” In short, liberals simply, either due to obtuseness or arrogance or sociopathy, don’t consider the costs of their solutions the same as “other people.”

“But I struggle to reconcile the general conservative insistence that charity, business or “the market” is always the best way to solve society’s problems when it comes to spending (public = their) money, but are more than happy to have the state tell people what the can and can’t do when it comes to their private lives as exemplified by (but not limited to) their views on homosexuality, sex outside marriage, prostitution, drugs, alcohol, etc. Clearly the mindset of many conservatives allows the state to interfere in some areas of life but not others, but you wouldn’t know that from a lot of what they say.”

    Answer:
    Costs and benefits.

Liberals and conservatives both seem to be willing to allow folks to spend their sleeping hours without much intrusion. The difference between how much of the rest of our lives they each seems to be willing or interested in intruding upon is striking.

We spend right about 1/4 of our week earning our livings. Liberals seem to consider this “public” time, and thus a prime target for intrusion. In contrast, we spend how much time engaged in sex, drugs, and alcohol? (wastrels excluded, of course) Seriously, just from a time perspective, the liberals seem to want to butt in a whole lot more than conservatives. ermm.gif And the areas! I realize it’s hard for some people to grasp this, but on an individual level, neither sex, nor drugs, nor alcohol, nor even rock’n’roll is nearly as important to surviving as bringing home the bacon.

Heh. Surviving and working is all very noble, but sex, drugs &rock&roll are things we live FOR 😉

The use of a strawman. Barack would be proud, for this is his favorite approach

but are more than happy to have the state tell people what the can and can’t do when it comes to their private lives as exemplified by (but not limited to) their views on homosexuality, sex outside marriage, prostitution, drugs, alcohol, etc

As much as anything, these are fiscal issues. Of course, people looking for license to engage in them do not like to see them as framed this way

Clearly the mindset of many conservatives allows the state to interfere in some areas of life but not others, but you wouldn’t know that from a lot of what they say.”

Once again, consider money. Who earns it, and who wants it?

Liberals are very much about taking money from those who work, and giving it to those who don’t.

And then of course, much of this can be considered in moral terms, e.g. making parents of better character.

And then there is the type best exemplified by Hillary. Enter politics, “fight” for laws etc. to channel more of other peoples money to the underclass, and get rich doing it (147 million since 2007).

Because if you have no facts to back your argument/belief system, arrogance is your only refuge.

By today’s diminished standards, “smart” no longer means success in real world terms (ie doing smart stuff….as in creating something that is actually useful and/or performing a task that is actually important). “Smart” means someone successfully navigated his or her way through some (preferably “elite”) degree-granting institution.

“The people”, you see, are just too stupid to understand (unless they happen to agree with the “superior” smug ones). Not only progressives do this, but progressives do seem to do it much more than anyone else (they’re like the Saudi Arabia of arrogance-huge proven reserves).

That’s true, but one doesn’t have to be an actual inventor to be smart. Just about any skilled craftsman (or nurse’s aid for that matter) is smarter in a more useful way than the average pundit/politician/liberal arts or journalism major who would look down on them for the fact they do something useful (they’d never criticize any actual human parasite, they fancy themselves “speaking for” professional victims everywhere, building up their fortresses so they never actually encounter any of these people in real life that they are so supposedly concerned about).

Smug people also tend to smack-talk on an infantile scale (while asserting their intellectual superiority, frequently and without preamble). Here is another post from band camp:

“Cowboy. What a weird insult. I thought the lefties were for the common working man? I guess once you get an expensive degree from an expensive university you can ridicule people who work for a living. I always thought of a cowboy as an honorable, hard-working, independent-minded sort who would give you the shirt off his back if you needed it. On second thought, I now realize that I know why lefties would find a cowboy frightening; just compare a cowboy to pajama boy . . . best to demonize the cowboy before that happens.”

“Band Camp”= an old political debate site I moderated for many years.
I’ve referenced it a few times and figured folks are probably tiring of hearing me mention it. Like the American Pie geek who always talked about band camp. So I started calling it band camp 🙂
