Previously the Alpha was defined. The wolf just below the alpha in the hierarchy is the Beta, and it is implied by this that he is very competent. Yet with wolves, only alphas mate. And in modern times the situation appears to be trending that way with humans also.
As mentioned above, the beta is competent, but not dominant. These are the kinds of men that civilization needs in abundance to thrive. Men who get things done; ones that do the work themselves. As for dominant men, civilization does not need that many of them; as they tend to jockey among themselves for dominance (with no useful work being done).
For the longest time civilizations cultivated and rewarded such men. This is how in large part they became civilizations. But in the present day, it appears that civilization believes itself wealthy enough that these men no longer need to be cultivated and rewarded. Part of that reward was an expectation that comparable level women available for marriage would be in the offing. Followed by a family to call his own. For the modern day beta men, marriage and children may eventually become available (often much later than in earlier generations), but the family would never be truly his. It is hers, to do with as she sees fit; so says the law (effectively).
Modern Beta men often spend their late teens and twenties developing job skills and building a small nest egg. Typically during this period, they have little success with women, as they do not generate the one thing in women that they seem to value above all else — tingles.
But a woman cannot live her life by tingles alone, so as the modern Beta man enters his thirties, he gets interest from women. But the interest is typically due to the woman’s need for sperm donation and future provisioning (including possibly children she brings into a marriage). Perhaps she temporarily convinces herself that she loves him, but she may not be able to maintain this fiction for long. Her resentment builds and after she bears her desired amount of children, he is pushed out the door. To continue paying for twenty years or more. This is a common trajectory for a modern beta man.
It was not always this way. My Dad was as beta as they come. Yet he married, had a loving wife, and a family to call his own. Women were raised differently then. And society had different expectations.
P.S. As always NAWALT applies.
Does everybody see that dark dot in the lower left of the photo? That would be the Loch Ness monster.

“Yet with wolves, only alphas mate.”
Um…the reason only ‘alpha’ wolves mate in a pack is because nature abhors inbreeding and most animals have a psychological bias against mating within one’s immediate family. A typical wild wolf pack is made up of a father, a mother (possibly 2), and their sons/daughters. The only times real fights for dominance are found is in *captive* populations.
Is this new information? It’s what I was taught in high school biology. 😕

Notice how the woman response poorly to a modest amount of dominance. If a fella ups his game, she responds much more. In the area when she really starts responding is the “tingle” threshold.
Or to put it more simply, it is the minimum point where she gets “turned on”.
But money by itself usually can never do it.

I had a conversation with a man (I think on Private Man’s blog) who helped a woman who was being harassed outside of a bar by her date. I told him that was a brave and kind thing to do, but many of the other (male) commenters said he was incredibly “beta” for not getting her number afterwards. All I could think was how awkward that would be.

There was a guy I’ve known since way back when, before we had kids. He was in our squadron and treated his wife like shite (“oh so alpha…”) She eventually left him and he dated around so much we called him the ‘manwhore’. He’d brag about banging so many hot babes left and right. He said, “Sometimes it’s all I can do to throw the sheets in the drier in the hour before the next one comes over.”
He had photos he shared with everyone, even those who didn’t express an interest…I wasn’t really impressed with the one girl I saw he brought to a squadron event, and I’m assuming she was the “hot one” but whatever. Cause alphas brag a lot for validation reasons…right? It’s just weird. He’s married and miserable now, btw…to a wife a lot worse than the first one (who was actually pretty and sweet).

The reason that there is a manosphere is because of the large cluster___k that society has become. Men need to understand what is happening to them. The models created by the manosphere, like most psychological and sociological models, are not complete. They are simple models that work well enough.
A prior post on this website explains the differences between “alphas for men” and “alphas for women”. In times past, women for the most part were not allowed to act upon an impulse related to “alphas for women”, and as such, this definition did have any real impact on society. Now that women are in the drivers’s seat, they are in a position to encourage the “alphas for women” type. And once again, much of the “alpha for women” scheme is just posturing, with no real work to develop oneself required. Which path would the average young man choose?

And it was a good post. For me, the difficulty is personal – but I’m not preoccupied with it.
On some blogs, some blokes have got it all worked out. Their entire universe is Alpha/Beta/Tingles, and you better learn to fit into it or you don’t exist.
Alpha/Beta is a concept I easily understand in the way MGTOW discuss it. But it’s weird for me personally because it just doesn’t apply in my own little world. Is Alpha/Beta exhaustive? A man is one or ‘tother? (I know there are other labels such as Zeta but they apply in a different context.) When I ask, which am I? … I don’t find a ready answer. The concept is easy. The IRL is difficult.

You asked a question about which path young men are choosing to take. What young men must be seeing has to be a lot worse than what we grew up with. They are seeing the nonsense that their female collegues are getting away with and makeing a conscious decision to not participate in the SMP. That says a lot when you factor in teenage hormones.
I have to wonder that, as narcissim progresses, will allmen end up being beta?

FB doesn’t actually say the Alpha of today are “dominant men” in the old sense. In order to monopolize the breeding, the alpha of yesteryear had to be alpha among men.
The Alpha of today are just a joke. They are not selected for their superior genes. They are men who persisted with scatty women until they acquired the experience that makes scatty women real easy. From my perspective, it’s a case of scatty on scatty. Today’s “alpha” fail with most men and with a lot women as well.

Most of today’s “alphas” are products of general economic prosperity. They would have died a cruel death in the long past, as they are really not competent at anything other than making women tingle. And you can’t eat tingles.

I don’t see those preferences translating to what happens on the ground. There’s many a slip twixt the cup and the lip. In the reality I see, men who are married or in LTR are almost all Beta. It would involve importing a large number of men who would not tolerate the current level of corruption in Russian governance. Even in an alternate universe where Putin wanted less corruption, he would be deposed by the oligarchs before this would get off the ground. Putin has no interest in helping you.
Putting aside Putin, there isn’t as many women of appropriate age in the FSU as you think. Sure the there are more men than women, but a lot of that is driven by men dying significantly earlier than women but late enough so that the low male to female ratio is driven by people over 50. Even if Russia has a lot of GILFs, there is no reason for men to migrate for that.

I agree that women as a group don’t care about men as a group, and I’m not saying this is good or justified or fair. It absolutely isn’t, and men as a group shouldn’t feel like they *must* care about women as a group until things change.
But what about individual situations? Should a woman just walk by a man getting hit by his wife in public? People who are being discriminated against for no good reason? Should a man simply shrug and keep walking if he sees a woman being slapped around by her boyfriend? There has to be some point where our conscience shakes us and says “Help Stop This!”. When we witnesses something wrong or discriminatory, and every fiber of our being flares up with righteous indignation, giving us the ability to speak out.
