Probably most men have not heard the term hypergamy. Yet it is something that affects men’s lives greatly. Moreover, it affects most men’s lives negatively. Even the men who see its effects in a positive light are in the long term negatively impacted. Furthermore, women are truly victims also (real victims, not manufactured for the news media victims). This all rather seems like the plague. Actually, it is probably worse. The plague comes and the survivors pass on immunity to successor generations. Unleashed hypergamy creates misery for generation after generation after generation (approximately three generations so far).
Hypergamy, in short, is the desire for women to have sex with only the “sexiest” men. “But of course”, one might say. After all, men naturally want the most beautiful women. So, everything is equivalent, and we can all go home. Well, there is more to the story. Much more. Information that many deliberately try to ignore.
Men may want the most beautiful women, but they realize that not all men can have the very best, and are often willing to commit to one that is not top-tier. After all, men learn quickly that life is work, it can be difficult, and that compromises need to be made. From a mathematical perspective, men value women on a more or less linear scale.
Women on the other hand, really truly do want the sexiest men, and place a very high value on them. The non top-tier men are valued very little. This OKCupid study really shows this dynamic in action. Your homework is to go there and read it.
http://blog.okcupid.com/index.php/your-looks-and-online-dating/
While I may never find it to link, Karen Straughan was talking about the changes in the sexual marketplace. While men were satisfied with finding a partner to pair up with, as they were never socially guaranted this, women were. What women wanted in the wake of all the advances of the twentieth century was an upgrade on available men.
In a gynocentric society, whatever they want, they get. How this is to be accomplished is anybody’s guess. At present, they have to share top tier men and the bottom eighty percent can live in basements and play video games for all they care.
There will be repercussions. Society cannot say “F*ck you” to eighty percent of men without repercussions.
In the meanwhile, societies and nations that are not participating in this will out compete those who are.

I would agree farm boy, both men and women are losing out on real, satisfying, deep relationships in this new model. Even the top tier men who are supposedly “winning” seem to be lamenting the new deal. Or that’s how it seems to me when reading the pua sites. I don’t hear many women that say they are happier, even if they cannot say why. The post on my site today looks at this from the hypergamus gal who doesn’t understand the backstory angle, have a look! I look forward to part two!

Farm Boy,
The point that Karen Straughan was trying to get across was that women were never going to lose sexual/reproductive access. Sufficient quantity was always there. That left quality as the area for improvement.
For men, unless you’re very fortunate, access has always been a hurdle.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but hypergamy makes no sense in modern US, UK, Australia, Canada…pretty much anything that you could consider “Western” culture. I realize the evo-psych people among us will assert that 10,000 years ago it made sense. OK. Fine. I’ll buy that. But it’s now 10,000 years later.
Women can work and keep every dime (minus taxes) just like a man.
They can buy a house or rent an apartment under their own name just like a man.
They don’t need an escort to use public transportation, nor do they need a cosigner on a car lease or purchase.
There’s such an incredibly small (2%) pay gap that can’t be accounted for by life decisions or experience differences that it’s barely worth mentioning.
Wtf! I can see going for good looks, dependability, and healthy bodies when selecting for a mate, especially if you’re going to be the one to carry the child. But you *cannot* tell me women are so vapid as to not realize they are fully capable of creating decent lives for themselves based on their own merit and work ethic. Hypergamy has no place in a society where resources are open to every Tom, Dick, and Jane who can work for them.
Don’t tell me that “genetics” overrides ones ability to change. Homo sapiens are omnivores…I’ve successfully been a healthy ovo-lacto vegetarian for 17 years. Both sides of my family are predisposed to alcoholism and addictive tendencies…I don’t drink except a single glass of wine or liquor with dinner maybe 3x a month, and I avoid any/all recreational drugs including cigarettes/tobacco.
Bulls**t, you can’t change your genetic destiny. Unless we’re talking about extreme circumstances, that argument is a cop out for lazy people.

Sorry for jumping ahead of the “class”. It’s just that the idea Western women still require all these resources from men is crap. Men aren’t wallets. Boys aren’t ATMs in training.
I see no reason…none whatsoever…that women and men can’t come together, each with their own resources, to create a family or at least an equal relationship.

The line of thinking around the manosphere is that, because of all that a woman can do to provide for her own needs now, she requires that much greater a provider to see an improvement in lifestyle to satisfy hypergamy.
I did once refer to it as a form of greed in a comment. There is a place for it, when it’s time for mate shopping. After that, it is an impediment.

Hypergamy within a monogamous system is hard to criticise. Of course a woman wants the best sperm for her eggs. Men want the best vagina and womb for their willy after all.
But once married, the hypergamy needs to be reined in. IMHO
There’s also an issue over whether it leads to polygyny, if women will sacrifice exclusivity for access to higher-value sperm and cash then you move to a system of informal polygyny. At which point you may have a lot of men without any prospect of access to women ever. This is a great road to revolution. First class. MGTOW is the peaceful reaction to societally toxic female behaviour, there are others. Some say that part of the reasons for the Arab Spring was this. many lower class men couldn’t find work and so had no prospect of any family. They had nothing to lose in their eyes.

The current thread over at Bloom’s has lead me to conclude that a big weakness is that men don’t have a whole lot of confidence in women.

Fuzzie,
you need to find a unicorn, buddy.
I don’t believe that women can’t be rational adults capable of honouring their word and understanding consequences…but that’s not how the state is currently raising them. All you might do is test to the point that you personally look at the gamble you’re taking and decide that this woman here and now is worth the gamble for you because you have specific reasons for taking that gamble.
Tarn makes a very poor example because she describes herself as having a male mind. In all my correspondence with her I have found no reason to doubt the accuracy of that. I use her/she but I speak as if to a male, I would guess this would be my reaction IRL.
I’ve had no particular corresponding correspondence with other women who comment here, but (FWIW) I reckon there are a couple of NAWALTs amongst us.
They do exist, but they’re behaviour is a product of themselves, the state doesn’t police their behaviour unless it’s well outside acceptable norms for men. They will always have access to the weapons to harm you by proxy.
Now ‘all’ you need to do is balance how much you desire a woman in your life against the costs of hunting one and your level of aversion to living in the shadow of the law.
Your decision is not likely to be the same as mine. And that’s fine. I’m not the Messiah that you seek, I’m just a very naughty boy. Nobody burns for disagreeing with me…

an increasingly popular idea among many progressive writers on marriage and family: The theory that the falling divorce rate (among other indicators) among college-educated Americans is evidence that marriage has been successfully reinvented in the wake of the sexual revolution; that progressive ideas — the acceptance of premarital sex and cohabitation, an egalitarian vision of gender roles in parenting and breadwinning, a stronger emphasis on romantic compatibility and personal fulfillment — have basically been responsible for that reinvention;
